Implications of this scale to the learning and development process…

  1. The scale highlights the need for tools and practices to develop “in-the moment” self-awareness. Lacking these, behavioral change will not occur.
  2. It reveals why traditional “fact-based” training doesn’t work. To develop greater awareness, participants must have proven tools and application opportunities.
  3. The journey from unaware to fully aware is a significant challenge because of our innate blind spots and natural tendency to resist change. Ongoing feedback — such as through peer-to-peer feedback, coaching, and 360-degree assessments — must be provided for learning to occur.
